PARO and therapy robots

PARO is a robotic baby harp seal developed in Japan. It is classed as a medical device in the United States and has more research behind it than any other robotic pet.

What PARO does

• Responds to touch, light, sound, temperature and posture.

Price and supply in Australia

PARO is listed in Australia from $6,500, and distributors quote on request. At that price most homes buy one unit per wing or dementia unit, and staff use it in planned one-to-one or small group sessions rather than leaving it with one resident.

What the Australian trial found

Griffith University ran a cluster randomised trial across 28 aged care facilities in South-East Queensland with 415 residents living with dementia. Residents had PARO, a plush version of PARO switched off, or usual care, three times a week for 10 weeks. On video observation, PARO reduced agitation and increased pleasure compared with usual care. On the standard staff-rated agitation scale there was no difference between groups. A follow-up cost analysis found both PARO and the plush toy were cost-effective, and the plush toy was slightly better value.

The practical reading: PARO produces more engagement than a soft toy for many residents, and a much cheaper companion cat or pup may deliver part of that benefit. Many facilities use both. See the comparison.

Other therapy robots

Humanoid companion robots such as Abi and Matilda are also being trialled in Australian aged care. They talk, lead activities and play music, and are usually supplied on subscription. They serve a different role from a pet that is held and stroked.
