Robotic companion pets are battery-powered animals that look and feel like a cat, dog or seal and respond when held, stroked or spoken to. They are designed for older people and people living with dementia who cannot care for a live animal.
What they do
- Purr, meow, bark or make soft animal sounds when touched.
- Move their head, eyes, paws or tail.
- Sense touch and movement, and some respond to voice.
- Need no food, walking or vet care.
Who they help
Residents living with dementia in aged care are the largest group. Families also buy them for a parent who lives alone, and NDIS participants use them for calming and social engagement. They do not replace people. They give someone something to care for and something to talk about with staff and visitors.
